On June 22, 1937, Captain Sam B. Cooke of the Howitzer Company, 166th Infantry, announced the approval of the deed for constructing the Ironton National Guard Armory at the corner of 10th and Vernon Street. Over the decades, this building became home to generations of local soldiers and later the 216th Engineering Battalion. Today, The Armory Smokehouse continues that legacy—honoring Ironton's rich military heritage by serving as a place where the community can gather, share a meal, and celebrate the values of service, dedication, and unity.
